JOB DESCRIPTION

TMZ is looking for a Director of Broadcast Operations to join our team. The ideal candidate is a visionary who embraces innovation and actively seeks out new approaches, staying at the forefront of broadcast and emerging technologies. This pivotal role involves overseeing a broadcast team, managing budgets, and maintaining infrastructure to ensure seamless, high-quality delivery across all platforms. Key responsibilities include equipment maintenance, development of operating procedures, team coordination, regulatory compliance, and project and financial management. Strong leadership, technical expertise in broadcast technology and digital media, and excellent communication skills are essential.  This position reports to the Executive Producers.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, including operation of broadcast and playout systems, automation, signal distribution, and satellite/fiber transmission.
  • Manage and maintain broadcast equipment, digital systems, and physical facilities. 
  • Develop and implement operational policies, coordinate broadcast schedules, and ensure the reliability and quality of productions and content delivery. 
  • Lead, train, and supervise our technical and operational staff of 14.
  • Collaborate with other departments to evaluate, implement, and maintain cutting-edge broadcast solutions.
  • Manage department’s operational budget, vendor relationships and capital investment plans.
  • Ensure the company’s adherence to industry regulations, FCC rules, and safety protocols. 
  • Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies without compromising broadcast quality.
  • Champion operational redundancy, disaster recovery, and business continuity initiatives.
  • Oversee major projects, such as studio buildouts, from planning to implementation. 
  • Serve as operational leader to address all discrepancies in operations, including response to on-air emergencies.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Radio/TV, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in broadcast television and streaming operations.
  • Deep understanding of live news and sports broadcasting workflows and the urgency they demand.
  • Expertise with broadcast automation, signal routing, playout systems, transmission paths (satellite, fiber, IP), and OTT streaming.
  • Proven ability to manage large teams in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
